Dhanbad: The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has sent over 30 complaints in recent months to Bharat Coking Coal Limited ( BCCL ) over the quality of coal supplied by the latter. Sources in the DVC say that the cost of production has increased substantially on account of the inferior quality of coal.An engineer with the DVC, on condition of anonymity, said, “The company has deployed extra manpower to segregate boulders present in the coal. But stones and boulders still go into boiler and affect combustion. Huge amount of oil is needed in such a situation to continue the combustion process. The use of additional personnel and oil damages the financial health of the company. In spite of several complaints and meetings there has been no change in the quality of coal.”A complaint sent by Mejia Thermal Power Station (a DVC unit) to the general manager (quality) of BCCL on February 25, a copy of the complaint is with TOI, stated all wagons contained oversize boulders and stones. The rake sent from SGK siding of BCCL was loaded with stones for which a significant amount of demurrage charge has been paid. Public Relation Officer of DVC, Deo Shanker Sahay, said, “I have come across complaints regarding coal quality. In case of such issues, our power units correspond with coal companies to solve the problem.”BCCL authorities claimed that they crush coal before sending it. Rahul Ranjan, the manager of SGK siding of BCCL, said, “We crush coal before loading and make sure that stones or boulders are not present in the consignment.
