EC sets up 3,000 electoral clubs in schools, colleges for poll awareness

RANCHI: The state administration is leaving no stones unturned to reach out to voters and urge them to exercise their franchise in the Lok Sabha election . The Jharkhand office of the chief electoral officer has set up 3,359 Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELC) in schools and colleges across the state with an aim to spread awareness among the first-time voters.L Khiangte, state’s chief electoral officer, said, “The election commission will meet the deans and registrars of universities across the state to involve the ELCs in active awareness campaigns. We will also conduct a similar session of college ambassadors at the district level in the first week of April.”Meanwhile in Ranchi, the ELC of St Xavier’s College has been engaged in various Systematic Voter’s Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) activities soon after the dates of the elections were announced earlier this month.“We have organised several street plays through the ELC of St Xavier’s College. Other activities, including a mock poll, have been held in various colleges in Ranchi,” Shweta Ved, executive magistrate and joint in-charge of SVEEP (Ranchi), said.Apart from drawing the attention of first-time voters in colleges, the ELCs in the schools involving the students of Class IX to XIII will educate other students about the electoral process.“The state election commission has also set up 20,118 ‘Chunav Pathshala’ at polling booths to reach out to voters in rural areas,” Khiangte said.Khiangte further said that 37,097 service voters will cast their votes from all over Jharkhand, with Ranchi registering the highest number of service voters (6,681).
