Steel City environmentalists plan green campaign for poll manifesto

Jamshedpur: Climate activists and environmentalists in Jamshedpur will carry out public engagement campaigns across the constituency from April, to lobby various political parties to include environmental issues in their election manifestos ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
Construction of unauthorised colonies near river banks has contracted the two adjoining rivers of Subarnarekha and Kharkai posing threat to the ecology of the river.”
Jamshedpur will go to polls on May 12.Environmentalist K K Sharma said that India can’t afford to remain detached from imminent issues like change change and environmental degradation during polls.“The talks on building a ‘new India’ will remain hollow if political parties do not come forward with concrete measures to address problems related to environment,” Sharma, a zoology expert said.He said various civil society groups will come together to organise nukkad natak and jan choupals at popular hangouts from the first week of April.Lovely Ojha, another environment activist, echoed Sharma’s thoughts.
She said, “If we continue to overlook the issues that concern our environment, they will affect the people of the planet.”Ratnesh Singh, who is associated with the campaign to clean Kharkai river, said the political leaders must talk on solutions and alternative models of development that is environment and people-friendly.“Closure of the schools for several days due to the increased level of pollution in the air in Delhi earlier this year should trigger our politicians to think of sustainable development model for industrial towns like Jamshedpur and Adityapur,” Ratnesh said.Iterating that indiscriminate construction of houses have led to deforestation in the surroundings of the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, Sharma said: “Uprooting and felling of the trees is leading to depletion of the underground water table in the periphery of the industrial town.
