College-goers debate on use of social media, curbing fake news

The winning team was picked based on the best points both for and against the motion and how well the points were articulated.
Ranchi: Angira Bhattacharya and Pratyashaa Mukherjee of St Xavier’s College , Ranchi, successfully debated for and against the motion ‘Social Media is a Platform of Illusory Truth’ and took home the winner’s trophy of the Vikram Chabra Inter-College Debate Competition on Sunday.Jitu Kumar of Katras College , Dhanbad, was judged as the best speaker for the motion during the competition held at the Rotary Hall of Ranchi Club .
The participants debated on the importance of virtual identities, possible ways and means to curb the menace of fake news Ashbah Jawed, one of the organisers, said, “We had participants from all over the state like Dhanbad, Hazaribag and Jamshedpur.” He added that each competing team has two members and while one member debated for the motion, the other debated against the motion.
