The second consignment of 1.65 lakh Covishield vaccines landed at Birsa Munda International Airport in Ranchi around 11am on Wednesday morning. The consignment is meant for vaccinating healthcare workers of the state and central government as well as armed forces medical service personnel employed in Jharkhand.

Of the 1,65,570 vaccine doses received by the state; 1,54,650 are for healthcare workers, 9,620 for healthcare workers employed with central government facilities, and 1,300 are for the personnel of armed forces medical services based in Jharkhand.

The second lot of vaccines, which were taken to the state National Health Mission Headquarters in Namkum in an insulated temperature-controlled van, was provided police escort before they were dispatched to other districts and storage centres across the state.

Talking to TOI, state nodal officer for vaccination Dr Ajit Prasad said: “We have received the second consignment and this will be distributed to all 24 districts as per requirement. All zonal storage centres will store the vaccines and they will be later shifted to the respective districts.”

When contacted, state NHM officials said the second consignment will be used for vaccinating healthcare workers at a later stage as they have enough stock to administer the second dose to beneficiaries who have been administered the first dose.

On being asked whether the state health department has finalised the beneficiaries for the second round of vaccination, which includes frontline workers who have been on duty through the pandemic, officials said that they haven’t received any guidelines on the same from the Union health ministry.

“We are ready for vaccinating frontline workers and various government departments whose employees were deployed on Covid duty have been asked to share the details. But we will not start anything until we receive proper directions from the ministry of health and family welfare,” Prasad said.
