In an initiative to make financial knowledge accessible to the tribal people in the region, the Ranchi office of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has launched books in five tribal languages.

The books were released on Monday, on the first day of Financial Literacy Week. The theme for the annual Financial Literacy Week this year is “Credit Discipline and Credit from Formal Institutions”.

The general manager of the RBI Ranchi office, Sanjiv Dayal, said: “We have been celebrating Financial Literacy Week since 2016 in order to create awareness about the banking and the financial system among the masses. As Jharkhand is a tribal-dominated state and several residents are comfortable in their local dialects, we decided to disseminate the message of financial literacy in their languages. We have released booklets in five local languages — Santhali, Oraon, Kudukh, Mundari, and Ho — so that locals can understand financial concepts and services easily.”

Dayal added: “We are organising regular camps on financial literacy across all districts and our officials are visiting these camps to make people financially aware. We are also taking the help of locals in disseminating the information.”
The RBI has also directed all banks in the state to display posters and content related to the Financial Literacy Week at their rural branches and ATMs, among others.
