Family members of two of the four workers from Ramgarh’s Gola block, who went missing in the Chamoli disaster, arranged for money on their own and set out for Uttarakhand on Tuesday.

Family members of two of the four workers from Ramgarh’s Gola block, who went missing in the Chamoli disaster, arranged for money on their own and set out for Uttarakhand on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, deputy commissioner Sandeep Singh rectified the figure of missing people and said, “Earlier, we had received information that six workers from Gola are missing. However, we have confirmed and found four labourers of the block — Birsay Mahto, Mithlesh Mahto, Kuldeep Kumar Mahto and Lucky Mahto — are missing.”
Of the four, three are from Chokad village while Lucky hails from Sangrampur village.

In Chokad village, Birsay’s wife Rinki Devi said, “My husband had left for work at the NTPC project on January 6 and I had last spoken to him on Saturday night. On Sunday, we were informed about the disaster.”

Birsay’s father, 65-year-old Pyarelal said, “We are poor and have never received any government welfare scheme despite qualifying for them. We had tried to avail PM Awas Yojana, but couldn’t. Poverty and lack of opportunity led us to send my son out for work and I do not know what will happen to us if he never returns.” Birsay’s family belongs to the BPL category.

Neema Devi (21), the wife of Mithlesh Mahto (24), was getting impatient to know about her husband. With an ailing three-month-old girl child on her lap, she said, “Vinod Singh, a contractor from Bihar, had taken four workers from the village to Chamoli. We hope all of them return safely.”

Dilip Kumar Mahto, brother of another Kuldeep Kumar Mahto (27), said Singh asked them to reach Chamoli urgently. “Some families have arranged money on their own to go to Uttarakhand to trace them,” he said.

Local mukhiya Rupa Devi on the other hand said she is in touch with the missing workers’ families and will provide all possible help to them.
