The study reveals that beat perception is a separate cognitive mechanism that is already active at birth, not simply due to newborns statistical learning ability. The researchers conducted an experiment with 27 newborns, altering the timing of drum rhythms to distinguish between beat perception and statistical learning. The results confirm that newborns have the innate ability to hear the beat in music, which is crucial for their auditory development and may play a role in early cognitive development.
