Birsa Agriculture University adopts Nagri village to train farmers

RANCHI: Birsa Agriculture University on Saturday said it will adopt Nagri village in Ranchi district to develop it as a model agricultural village. It is after 25 years that the university has taken the responsibility to develop a village by imparting training and necessary resources to the farmers and showcase it as a model to other farmers. In the 1990s, the university had adopted Belangi village in Ranchi for supporting the farmers.BAU vice-chancellor Dr Parvinder Kaushal inaugurated the project as part of BAU's 37th foundation day celebrations. "Once the project is approved we can carry on with the activities for three to five years," Oraon said.After selection of farmers for training, Nagri village will be used as a model to train farmers from other districts and states as well. BAU is completing 36 years of research and teaching in agriculture and allied sciences on Monday.During the ceremony to mark the adoption of the village, deans, directors and scientists of the university accompanied the VC.

The delegation was welcomed by the farmers in villages.Director of extension education Dr Jagannath Oraon , who will head the project, said the team visited the villagers and went on a door-to-door drive to collect relevant data. "We have decided to talk to the villagers and collect data related to existing farming practice. Only after this will the results of intervention will be clear," he said.BAU will chalk out an agricultural plan in consultation with the villagers after engaging the scientists and directors in the department of soil science, horticulture, animal husbandry, dairy and others. "The university is not going to impose its idea over the farmers and plan its intervention in scientifically in due consultation with the farmers," Oraon said.The farmers will be offered free training on new farming techniques and correlated activities for a period ranging from three months to ten months.Though the university is prepared to meet the initial costs, the authorities have planned to send a proposal to Indian Council for Agriculture Research for funding the project. "Once the project is approved we can carry on with the activities for three to five years," Oraon said.After selection of farmers for training, Nagri village will be used as a model to train farmers from other districts and states as well. They will be invited to the University for a contact programme.The scientists said they believe that integrated farming, which involves agriculture, animal husbandry and horticulture, can double the income of farmers, and the results of the training they receive would be visible within a year."We have modern methods of irrigation, new variants of seeds and technology to augment fertility of the soil based on exact requirement of nutrients, which will be demonstrated to the farmers," said one of the senior scientists accompanying the team.
