Governor Droupadi Murmu returned land bill in May, but ministers kept in dark

Sources said Governor Droupadi Murmu returned the bill to the government on May 24 along with the 192 memorandums that Raj Bhavan received against the bill calling for her intervention, but the government has been keeping the development under wraps. Parliamentary affairs minister Saryu Rai denied having any information about the bill being returned by the Governor. Highly placed sources in Raj Bhavan, however, confirmed that the bill was returned by the governor, asking the government to reconsider its decision in light of the 192 representations that the Raj Bhavan received. RANCHI: The state government's options for getting the controversial Chhotanagpur Tenancy (CNT) and Santhal Pargana Tenancy (SPT) Act cleared have narrowed. Ten of the 11 ministers in the Das cabinet are presently attending a training programme at IIM Ahmedabad.

RANCHI: The state government's options for getting the controversial Chhotanagpur Tenancy (CNT) and Santhal Pargana Tenancy (SPT) Act cleared have narrowed. Sources said Governor Droupadi Murmu returned the bill to the government on May 24 along with the 192 memorandums that Raj Bhavan received against the bill calling for her intervention, but the government has been keeping the development under wraps. Highly placed sources in Raj Bhavan, however, confirmed that the bill was returned by the governor, asking the government to reconsider its decision in light of the 192 representations that the Raj Bhavan received. "It is now upto the government to introduce changes, keeping in consideration the objections raised by a crosssection of the society, or come up with the same bill. In either case, they have to get it passed by the assembly," said a senior official citing legal provisions.The government has not even consulted its council of ministers on the issue. Ten of the 11 ministers in the Das cabinet are presently attending a training programme at IIM Ahmedabad. Parliamentary affairs minister Saryu Rai denied having any information about the bill being returned by the Governor. "We have come to know about the developments through media reports while we were here attending the training session," he said.When asked if the government was planning to table a revised bill during the monsoon session of the assembly, K K Soan , revenue and land reforms department secretary, said they are yet to receive a letter or the bill returned by Governor. "We have no information about it. We have not received the files so far," he said.
