Rainfall deficit in Jharkhand now up to 50%

In meteorological parlance, scanty rainfall is used to describe rainfall deficit which is more than 60%. RANCHI: Half of the districts in the state are experiencing scanty rainfall with deficit hovering around 50% despite the southwest monsoon 's landfall a month ago.Out of 24 districts, 13 have recorded scanty rainfall since June 1. Rain deficit in Godda is 54% and 50% in Giridih. Garhwa is the driest district so far with rain deficit of up to 72%. Ranchi's rain deficit is 32% while in West Singbhum it has rained 45% less than normal.

In meteorological parlance, scanty rainfall is used to describe rainfall deficit which is more than 60%. These include Godda, Sahibganj, Giridih, Dhanbad, Koderma, Chatra, Palamu, Latehar, Gumla, Ranchi, Khunti, Seraikela-Kharsawan and West Singbhum. Garhwa is the driest district so far with rain deficit of up to 72%. Rain deficit in Godda is 54% and 50% in Giridih. West Singbhum has received 45% less rain than it normally does in the monsoon's first month.Palamu, Pakur, Gumla, Khunti and Latehar have recorded 35% less rain than normal. At Sahibganj and Seraikela-Kharsawan, rainfall shortage is around 40%. Ranchi's rain deficit is 32% while in West Singbhum it has rained 45% less than normal. Bokaro, Chatra, Deoghar and East Singbhum have recorded rain deficit of 20%.Weather scientists at Ranchi's Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) observatory on Wednesday said there were several factors behind less rainfall.The main reason, according to IMD Ranchi, has been the absence of low pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal. "So far, no depression or cyclonic circulation has been formed over the sea. As a result, the moisture, which is required for rain, did not enter the state's atmosphere," Binay Kumar Mondal, director of Ranchi IMD said.
