Jamshedpur: The Graduate School College for Women has removed a tribal lecturer after he invited his friends for a beef party in a Facebook post in May. The college had issued a show-cause notice to Jeetrai Hansda, but was not satisfied with his reply. The college, affiliated to Kolhan University (KU), decided not to extend his contract, which ended on Thursday. In his social media post, Hansda had said he was keen to host a beef party for his friends soon after the state government announced a ban on cow slaughter.Priya Sathi, mujhe koi batayega ki Jamshedpur main beef kahan milega. Main beef party dena chahata hun (Dear friends, will anybody inform me where in Jamshedpur beef is available. I want to organise a beef party)," he had written, adding, "While one must respect the sentiments of those who worship the cow and regard irt as their mother, to take offence to the objective study of history just because the facts don't suit their political calculations is yet another sign of a society where liberal space is being deliberately narrowed down," Hansda had wriiten.Students affiliated to BJP youth wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and other right-wing organisations took serious exception to the comment and demanded of the college and university authorities to "immediately sack" Hansda, a former alumnus of the National School of Drama.Upset over what he called "unprofessional conduct" of the college, Hansda, who was appointed on a contractual basis in 2016 to teach English literature, said he will contest the decision of the college. "I am yet to receive an official communication about my contract not being extended and only got the information on Saturday from college sources. I will explore all legal avenues to contest the decision," said Hansda, who is out of town on personal work."I see no reason for the college not to renew my contract since I removed the post from my Facebook account soon after objections were raised," Hansda said. He added that he deleted the post to avoid any confrontation as ABVP had raised objection to the comment.Though principal Usha Shukla couldn't be contacted, officials in the college administration said KU takes all decisions on all such controversial issues. "It is true that his contract has not been renewed, but the college administration has little role to take decisions in such matters," said a senior college professor requesting anonymity. When approached, a senior KU official said the college has been asked to report on whether Hansda's conduct is acceptable to the college and whether he deserves to be reinstated. "Depending on the report, the university will take a decision and till such time his contract will not be renewed," he added.
