Mukul files nomination for second battleground

SHILLONG: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma on Wednesday filed his nomination for Songsak , the second constituency he is contesting from, at the DC office in Williamnagar.Mukul had on Tuesday filed his nomination for his home turf, Ampati, where he will have a straight contest with BJP candidate Bakul Hajong. "Congress will gain seats in the election and get absolute majority with 40 seats," he said, addressing party functionaries at Congress Bhavan in Williamnagar. Former minister and senior BJP leader KC Boro filed his nomination for Tikrikilla constituency, while former minister and BJP leader Billykid Sangma filed his nomination for South Tura, from where NPP's Agatha Sangma had filed her nomination on Tuesday.Meanwhile, the general observer and police observer for Ampati (ST), Mahendraganj (ST) and Salmanpara (ST) constituencies Zuhair Bin Saghir and S V Pathak arrived at Ampati on Wednesday. In Songsak, Mukul will take on NPP strongman Nihim D Shira, a two-time MLA from Songsak and one of NPP's key leaders.After the last day of filing nominations, the total number of candidates in fray is 443, chief electoral officer FR Kharkongor said. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be taken up on Thursday.Some of the high-profile candidates who filed their nominations on the last day were Meghalaya speaker Abu Taheer Mondal (Congress) from Phulbari, sitting MLA Clement Marak (Congress) for Selsella, sitting MLA Ashahel D Shira (Independent) for Rajabala, sports and youth affairs minister Zenith Sangma for Rangsakona and his wife, sitting MDC and chairman of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council Sadhiarani M Sangma , for Gambegre.Leader of Opposition Donkupar Roy (UDP) filed his papers from Shella, urban Affairs minister Ronnie V Lyngdoh (Congress) from Mylliem, senior BJP leaders AL Hek from Pynthorumkhrah, Arphul Kharbani from Nongstion and Bakul Hajong at Ampati.Former minister Manas Chaudhuri, who was denied ticket by the BJP, filed his nomination papers for the South Shillong seat on a Congress ticket on Wednesday.
