Williamnagar: Union home minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday the murder of NCP candidate Jonathone N Marak on Sunday night is enough evidence that "utter chaos and lawlessness" reigns in Meghalaya.Addressing an election rally at Songsak in East Garo Hills, Singh expressed grief over the death of Jonathone - the Nationalist Congress Party candidate to the Williamnagar seat - and said his gruesome murder is an outcome of the Congress government's failure on the law and order front. "The attack on the NCP candidate is testimony to the fact that Mukul Sangma has failed to provide security to citizens of Meghalaya," Rajnath said.Promising that BJP will usher in an era of development, Rajnath said the lack of development under Congress is a "cruel joke." He accused the state government of failure in utilizing funds sanctioned by the Centre."In a state where people have no access to electricity and water, development will remain a far cry if Congress continues to reign over Meghalaya. However, if BJP is given the mandate, we promise that power will be provided to every household and village within two years," the home minister said.Taking credit for the newly inaugurated Tura-Shillong National Highway, he quipped, "The Centre is pumping money into Meghalaya's road maintenance but the state has failed in its duties."Addressing a crowd of over 5000 people who had gathered from different parts of East Garo Hills, Rajnath said, "People have to walk for several hours to fetch a bucket of water in the hills of Meghalaya, when the state boasts of highest rainfall in the country".Rajnath also said Meghalaya will find it difficult to implement PM narendra Modi's ambitious health insurance scheme if BJP is not elected here. "It is unfortunate that Meghalaya has failed to spend the health budget which was sanctioned.
