'Modi magic' faces big test in Meghalaya

  • | Saturday | 24th February, 2018

"Just how the Modi magic works here, if at all it does, will be interesting to see," says A Chaudhuri, a retired professor of history. SHILLONG: A tiny hill state which sends just two representatives to the Lok Sabha and only one to the Rajya Sabha and has a mere 60-member assembly is currently in the eye of a political storm. "The northeastern states have typically toed the lines of the party in power at the Centre always," Chaudhuri points out. Most political observers feel that the Prime Minister's visits to the state and his aggressive campaign would have a significant impact on the political equation in the state. The BJP on the other hand is upbeat with the 'special attention' that the central leadership of the party has accorded to the upcoming polls in three of the northeastern states. The ruling Congress is sweating it out to hold on to one of its last citadels and an ambitious BJP is yet again putting to test the mysterious 'Modi magic'.Prime Minister Narendra Modi , who had launched the BJP's election campaign by addressing a 'rally for change' in the state capital last December, took the campaign to a crescendo by playing up the secular credentials of his party in the Christian-dominated state in his address at an election rally in the Garo Hills in the last phase of campaigning on Thursday. "It has been amply demonstrated that Prime Minister Modi is keen on development of this region," said a BJP functionary, even as he maintained that the PM's visits to the poll-bound state were bound to bring political dividends to the party which is looking to make a dent in this age-old Congress fortress. In fact, BJP candidate from Pynthorumkhrah, A L Hek, who recently deserted the Congress, believes that the BJP would lead the next government in the state.BJP's Meghalaya in-charge and national spokesperson Nalin Kohli said that the support for the party has been phenomenal and that change in Meghalaya was imminent. With Meghalaya having no credible history of a pre-poll alliance, it's an open house of sorts with the powerful regional parties all set to play kingmaker yet again after the election verdict.
