DC holds meet to discuss encroachment on Tura Peak

The DC also suggested engaging self help groups for the maintenance of picnic spots and directed the village headmen to take stern action if any illegal encroachment takes place in the areas under their jurisdiction. SHILLONG: West Garo Hills deputy commissioner Ram Singh met Nokmas (traditional village heads), locality heads and various departments at the DRDA Conference Hall in Tura on Saturday and held discussions on the encroachment of Tura Peak The meeting was held to deliberate on the problem of massive deforestation taking place in and around the Tura Peak, with trees being replaced by commercial plantation crops, mainly Areca nut. Encroachment into the reserve forest area in and around the Tura Peak was also discussed. Pointing out the increase in Areca nut plantation in Darengre and all along the hill slopes of Tura Peak, Singh said the situation was alarming and it would lead to all water sources drying up after 10 years."The DC advised headmen of respective localities to organize awareness programmes and sensitize the people about the need to protect the environment and water bodies for future generations. Block Development Officers were directed to instruct the local people to inform to picnickers not to leave any waste at the spot since measures for garbage disposal are not accessible here," an official said.The official added that the DC has also urged the concerned authorities to spread awareness about the ill-effects of using plastic and the pollution it leads to. Singh added that directives will soon be issued for banning plastic water bottles, cups and plates from August 15. He said this ban would pave the way for promotion of small-scale industries in the region. The DC also suggested engaging self help groups for the maintenance of picnic spots and directed the village headmen to take stern action if any illegal encroachment takes place in the areas under their jurisdiction.
