East Jaintia, Ri-Bhoi locals asked to be on alert against illegal migrants

"Any person(s) whose identity is found to be not clear should be brought to the notice of the police at the earliest," deputy commissioner Federick M Dopth said. SHILLONG: The East Jaintia Hills and Ri-Bhoi district administrations have urged residents to remain vigilant against any possible infiltration following the release of the final National Registration of Citizens (NRC) draft, from which over 40 lakh names have been excluded in neighbouring Assam. "All people are urged to remain vigilant so that there is no illegal intruders entering any villages in the district of East Jaintia Hills," an official notification issued by the office of the deputy commissioner at district headquarters Khliehriat said on Thursday. "The deputy commissioner has also called upon each and everyone to cooperate with the district administration in order to maintain peace and tranquillity in the district," an official from the district administration said.Ri Bhoi deputy commissioner RM Kurbah also urged the public and village headmen to be alert following the declaration of the NRC draft. Villagers and local heads have been asked to inform the district administration if they find illegal immigrants entering their villages.The Khasi Students Union (KSU), which had set up its own checkpoints in West Khasi Hills , Ri-Bhoi and East Jaintia Hills, had 'pushed back' around 1500 people, who were travelling from the neighbouring state, ostensibly for not having valid documents in support of their citizenship.Chief minister Conrad Sangma has said the government is expediting the setting up of entry/exit points in the state to check illegal migration.
