Janmashtami celebrated across Meghalaya

SHILLONG: Janmashtami, the festival heralding the advent of Shree Krishna, was celebrated across Meghalaya with joy and religious fervour on Sunday and Monday.Chief minister Conrad Sangma said in a message of greeting, "On the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami, I convey my heartiest greetings and good wishes to the people, especially the Hindu community. Discourses on the teachings of Shree Krishna, including readings from the Bhagawad Gita, were also delivered on the occasion. May the festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna spread peace, love, hope and happiness amongst the people of our beloved state." Governor Tathagata Roy also sent out a message of greeting to mark the day.The various temples in the state capital were illuminated and devotees thronged these temples to offer puja. Bhajans, kirtans, midnight pujas and cultural programmes were held at many locations, as was the traditional 'Nanda Utsav', celebrating the birth of Shree Krishna.Many devotees thronged the Hindu Mission at Mawprem, Jagannath Mandir, Police Bazar, Narsingh Akhara, Garikhana, Ramakrishna Mission, Bharat Sevashram Sangha , Radha Krishna shrines and Radha Krishna Mandir, Survey of India, Barik, Iskcon temple at Rynjah and other temples in the city.Community celebrations of Janmashtami were also organized at the Jhalupara and Rilbong localities, where the idols of Gopala, the child Krishna, were installed on decorated swings.
