Meghalaya will go for NRC in phases: Conrad

He said the Union railway minister has agreed to his proposal of setting up an entry and exit centre at the Mendipathar Railway Station to instill confidence in people. Conrad said he has asked the political department to further strengthen the provisions of the Act.The state government, added Conrad, had taken measures to check any adverse fallout in the state following declaration of the draft NRC in neighbouring Assam . SHILLONG: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma told the assembly on Wednesday that the state government would move forward in the direction of National Register of Citizens (NRC), based on the National Population Register, in a phased manner by taking all the stakeholders into confidence.Observing that it was a 'sensitive issue', the CM said the NRC exercise has huge financial implications and needs manpower which could not be done overnight. "All the district administrations in the state are keeping a close watch on the registration of new names on the electoral rolls," he said, adding that police have been asked to remain vigilant against influx. "Deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong and home minister James Sangma will visit the railway station after the end of the current assemblky session to study the ground situation," the CM told the house.Replying to a short duration discussion on NRC, the chief minister said there were a number of infiltration check gates along the inter-state boundary which were being manned by 252 personnel on a rotation basis.
