Meghalaya Police on vigil to implement SC order on crackers

The time for bursting low-decibel and low-emission crackers has been fixed from 8 pm to 10 pm in the entire district. A large number of community Kali Pujas are being held across the state, with the largest number being in East Khasi Hills district and the Garo Hills region. SHILLONG: The state police have mounted their vigil to ensure that the order of the Supreme Court regarding restriction and regulation of bursting of fireworks during Diwali is adhered to in letter and spirit. "We are maintaining vigil to ensure that the directions of the apex court regarding bursting of crackers are not violated during Diwali," a senior police official said, adding that action would be initiated against anybody found violating the SC directions.The East Khasi Hills district administration issued directives following the Supreme Court order. Devotees have been visiting the various puja pandals and temples to offer obeisance to the goddess.

The time for bursting low-decibel and low-emission crackers has been fixed from 8 pm to 10 pm in the entire district. The DC cautioned that any deviance from the order 'will invite strict action as per law'.The order further said any bursting of crackers for religious, social or cultural purposes will necessitate permission in writing from the office of the deputy commissioner, failing which parties concerned will be held responsible.Meanwhile, private premises, shops and marketplaces in the capital town and elsewhere in the state have been tastefully illuminated for the occasion of Diwali. Governor Tathagatha Roy and chief minister Conrad Sangma greeted the people of the state on occasion of Kali Puja and Diwali.On the other hand, a large number of tourists have also arrived here to spend Diwali holidays in these salubrious surroundings, with pink cherry blossoms all over adding to the pristine beauty of the evergreen Pine City.
