Protest against attack on RTI activist, home min promises action

SHILLONG: A protest meet was organized in the city on Saturday by the Thma U Rangli Juki (TUR) condemning the murderous attack on social activist Agnes Kharshiing and her associate Amita Sangma in coal-rich Jaintia Hills.The demonstration was held at the parking lot near the Additional Secretariat to protest against the culture of violence, against the mining mafia besides for justice, environment and human rights. "This cowardly attack on one of the leading anti corruption human rights activist of Meghalaya clearly points to the impunity with which mafias are operating in the state under political patronage," TUR coordinator Mantre Passah said.He said that it is important to remember that Kharshiing had been at the forefront of exposing the nexus under which illegal coal mining is taking place in the state despite the NGT ban. The atmosphere of fear mongering and hate that is being instigated against anyone who questions the system and those in power is these days rampant in Meghalaya and is in fact being encouraged by public figures instigating violence against any dissenter," Passah said.The Meghalaya chapter of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) has demanded a CBI or judicial probe into the assault on the RTI activists to ascertain if there is nexus between the coal mafia and the 'authorities'.Home Minister James Sangma, who along with his brother chief minister Conrad Sangma were on a tour of Europe, cut short his stay and flew in to visit Kharshiing and Sangma in the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences here Saturday.The home minister enquired after the conditions of the two activists and met with the team of doctors treating them.
