SHILLONG: The ginger trader from Goalpara, who was abducted at gunpoint by armed men on Tuesday morning, has been released unharmed. The abductors released the trader in a jungle near Bansamgre on Tuesday night, police said. One Salsrang, alias Mogo, from Rongsak has been arrested in connection with the incident. Tapas Maji (37), who conducts business at Krishnai market in the Goalpara district , was kidnapped at 8.30am on Tuesday. According to reports, around 5-6 masked men carrying arms came on motorcycles, stopped the pick-up van in which Maji was travelling at Bamsam Awe, and took him away. Following his abduction, a massive search operation was launched by the police and local villagers in the South Garo Hills district. Police suspected that the trader was abducted by a gang of extortionists.Maji said his abductors have taken away cash amounting to Rs 70,000 from him before leaving him in the jungle. After the gang members fled, the trader found his way to nearby Bansamgre, where he was provided shelter for the night by a villager.
