Punjab to give Rs 60 lakh relief to Sikhs affected in Shillong race clashes

A total of Rs 5 lakh compensation has been approved for Satpal Singh, whose truck was set ablaze during the clashes. Similarly, Gurmeet Singh, whose scooty showroom was set afire during clashes, would get Rs 3 lakh compensation. As the delegation had detailed discussions with the Sikh community members, they had requested the Punjab government for some monetary assistance or compensation. After the clashes, curfew was imposed in various localities. On September 28, Amarinder had directed that the affected Sikhs be provided requisite amount from the chief minister’s relief fund.On Tuesday, the cabinet gave its nod for relaxation in instructions of the relief and resettlement department.

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab cabinet on Tuesday approved Rs 60 lakh compensation to the Sikh community against damage caused to their properties during the Sikh-Khasi clashes in Shillong , earlier in May-June this year.Violence had erupted in Shillong on May 31 after an altercation between a few women from Punjabi Lane area and a city bus driver and conductor spiralled out of control. Rumours circulated on social media had fueled mob fury and led to days-long riots in the Meghalaya capital.Concerned about security threat to Sikhs in Shillong, Amarinder had sent a four-member team headed by Cabinet minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa to Shillong to take stock of damage caused to the properties of the Sikh community. As the delegation had detailed discussions with the Sikh community members, they had requested the Punjab government for some monetary assistance or compensation. On September 28, Amarinder had directed that the affected Sikhs be provided requisite amount from the chief minister’s relief fund.On Tuesday, the cabinet gave its nod for relaxation in instructions of the relief and resettlement department. Out of the total approved compensation amount, Rs 50 lakh would be provided for reconstruction of Khalsa middle school at Bara Bazar in Shillong, since its old building was declared unsafe.Sangam Singh of Punjabi Colony at Bara Bazar would be given Rs 2 lakh assistance for the damage caused to his shop in Sikh-Khasi clashes. Similarly, Gurmeet Singh, whose scooty showroom was set afire during clashes, would get Rs 3 lakh compensation.
