Meghalaya NGOs stage stir against 'Centre's betrayal'

SHILLONG: A conglomeration of 14 NGOs, under the banner of Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), on Friday organized a massive protest at Khyndailad (Police Bazar) to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. Rani added that leaders of various groups of the region under the umbrella of Northeast Indigenous People's Forum will hold a meeting in Guwahati next week to decide on the next course of action. "The first time they betrayed us was during the Partition in 1947. And now again, they have betrayed us by bringing this bill," he said.FKJGP president Welbirth Rani said, "The proposed amendment betrays an evil intentention to hurt the indigenous communities of the region." FKJGP and another Meghalaya-based NGO, Ri-Bhoi Youth Front (RBYF), held a 'black flag day' in protest against the bill.Shouting slogans against the NDA government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the protesters burnt the effigies of the bill.Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) general secretary Sadon K Blah said the Centre has betrayed the people of the northeast.
