A REPORTER SHILLONG: The Local Truck Association Hima Khyrim and Mylliem Lum Association of East Khasi Hills district, has asked Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to deal with drugs and other Intoxicants which is on the rise in the State. In this connection, the Association has also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister apprising him that in the last few years the Association has witnessed that transactions in drugs and other illegal intoxicant substances are increasing. Pointing out that the number of youths getting intoxicated with drugs and other Intoxicants is also increasing, it added that such a state of affairs has badly affected the wellbeing, law and order and welfare of the society as a whole. “These issues are a matter of deep concern; everyone must take the responsibility to do something, since it is not only the locals that are affected,” Association president Egenstar Kurkalang said. Citing the recent incident of the police seizing a vehicle involved in such activity, he pointed out it was coming from Manipur. He further said that the persons involved in these illegal activities are of mixed community having interstate links, especially among the north-eastern States. Kurkalang also said that the most affected groups are the youths and school or college-going students. “Another matter of serious concern is the increasing number of dropout students, along with the rise in crimes and other illegal activities. Hence the government should strongly deal with these nefarious activities immediately,” he said. Kurkalang also said that the government should take the initiative to frame a strong policy to curb such practices. He stressed the need for appointing trained personnel in every police station in the city to deal with this specific matter.
