Meghalaya based activist Hasina Kharbhib gets Mother Teresa Award

Hasina Kharbhih, a Meghalaya-based activist has been awarded the Mother Teresa Memorial Award 2019 for Social Justice, at the Harmony International Conference in Mumbai on Saturday, in recognition of her 30-year-long work to check trafficking and to support livelihoods. Harmony Foundation hosted the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice. Earlier, the prestigious award was given to Noble laureates like Dalai Lama, Malala Yousafzai, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Bin Mohammad and voluntary organizations Medecins Sans Frontieres. In the year 2005, the award was instituted in memory of mother Teresa who was canonized a Saint by Pope Francis in the Vatican. Hasina Kharbhih, a Meghalaya-based activist has been awarded the Mother Teresa Memorial Award 2019 for Social Justice, at the Harmony International Conference in Mumbai on Saturday, in recognition of her 30-year-long work to check trafficking and to support livelihoods. She is the Founder and Managing Director of Impulse Social Enterprises based in Shillong. She is also an Ashoka Fellow and Aspen ILI Fellow. She has helped 72,442 survivors of human trafficking not only in the Northeast but also in neighbouring countries like Nepal, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. Kharbhih delivered a speech on Combating Contemporary forms of Slavery during the award ceremony which was held on 2nd November. The mission she started in Meghalaya has evolved into a global program. It aims to put an end to human trafficking and exploitation worldwide. She has been working tirelessly to provide sustainable livelihood in a safe environment for women and children. Harmony Foundation hosted the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice. It accelerates selfless and intrepid individuals and organizations that have drained all of their energies and creativities towards social justice, peace, and harmony. Harmony Foundation was founded in October 2005. It is an international NGO organization founded by Dr. Abraham Mathai to established social cohesion between various communities, castes and without discrimination on the grounds of religion, caste, creed, gender or region.
