Staff Correspondent Shillong: The State celebrated its 48th Statehood Day on Tuesday by rekindling the non-violence movement that led to its creation besides tinkling on the thought process on the challenges to strive forward on path of development. During an official programme held at the State Central Library, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma led from the front in remembering the Statehood movement. “They have the vision and valour but fought in a non-violent way and this is the spirit that we should imbibe”, stated the Chief Minister said, even as he added that the State could have done better in all spheres after attaining Statehood with governance that could be guided by our own intellect. While talking about the 48 years of Meghalaya that was carved out of composite Assam, Sangma said that there are still many challenges that the State is still facing in various sectors. “As a government, we are giving a lot of priorities to improve our efficiency in the delivery system at the grassroots. Lot of programmes and schemes have been made for the next one year; there will be a lot of investments that I will announced on Republic Day”, the Chief Minister stated with an astound focus on 2022 as the year that should make Meghalaya as one of the top State, at least amongst the small category States of the country. “We will touching 50 (fifty years of Statehood) and I want to see different indicators by 2020. We have the right team and it needs an extra effort to achieve to make Meghalaya the number 1 State,” he further said while adding that a committee has also been instituted for documentation of the resilience Statehood movement for the present and future generations to come. State Minister of Information and Public Relation, Alexander L Hek spoke about the significance of the day where the leaders achieved the aspirations through non-violent means. Hek said that the day is a day of celebration and remembrance as since the time of the hill State movement, all were pursuing the same goal of pushing Meghalaya to a greater height and achieved Statehood in a non-violent way and therefore called upon the people of the State to nurture the environment of peace which is crucial for overall growth. He also said that the need of the hour is for all to come together and work for the cause of progress, development and security in all aspects.
