Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday announced the extension of the lockdown in the most affected East Khasi Hills district to May 24. The decision to extend the lockdown by one week was taken after reviewing the Covid-19 situation in the district.

Earlier on May 8, the lockdown in the district was extended to 17 May, given the massive surge in Covid-19 cases, initially, a full lockdown was imposed in the district from 5 May to 10 May. The state capital, Shillong, is located in the East Khasi Hills district.

319 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in the district on Thursday, while 16 more patients died of the virus, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong informed.

Director of Health Services Dr Aman War said that Meghalaya received the record highest number of 591 new cases of Covid-19 on Thursday.

He said 18 more patients died in the state of which 16 were reported in East Khasi Hills district.
