Five to seven people have been feared trapped in an accident while digging a tunnel in a coal mine in East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. This accident happened near Sutnga village. According to the information, all these labourers working in mines are from Assam. All these people are trapped inside the mine since Sunday.

Earlier in January too, there was a big accident inside the coal mine in the Rymbai area of East Jaintia Hills. While digging a tunnel in the mine here, 6 labourers fell into a 150 feet deep ditch. However, later all the 6 bodies were taken out from the trench by the local administration and police.

Illegal rat-hole coal mining is allegedly rampant in Meghalaya despite a ban imposed by the National Green Tribunal in 2014. Most coal mines are owned by powerful people, activists say.
