Agatha Sangma on NPP list of candidates for 2018 Meghalaya polls

SHILLONG: The Opposition National People's Party ( NPP ) on Thursday announced its first list of candidates for the upcoming 2018 assembly election, which makes it official now about former Union minister Agatha K Sangma contesting the polls from the South Tura constituency.Agatha, who was the youngest minister in the then UPA government, had vacated the prestigious Tura Lok Sabha seat in favour of her father, the veteran Purno Sangma, who went on to win a bypoll.Late PA Sangma's eldest son and sitting legislator James K Sangma will seek re-election from his Dadengre home constituency. Following PA Sngma's death, his son Conrad contested and won the bypoll from Tura on an NPP ticket.Meanwhile, besides Agatha and James, the NPP's first list of candidates, which was released by its state president WR Kharlukhi here includes (Jowai) Wailadmiki Shylla, (Mookaiaw) Gilbert Sten, (Mawhati) Dasakhiatbha Lamare, (Nongpoh) Cleophas B Syiem, (Jirang) Sosthenes Sohtun, (Nongkrem) Hispreachingson Shylla, (Mawsynram) Laplu M Sangma, (Shella) Sainkupar Riahtam, (Mairang) Lawanpynshngain K War, (Nongstoin) Macmillan Byrsat, (Rambrai-Jyrngam) Alfred Kharbani, (Mendipathar) FW Momin, (Resubelpara) TD Shira, (Songsak) Nihim D. Shira, (Williamnagar) Marcuise N Marak, (Raksamgre) Benedict Marak, (Phulbari) Manirul Islam Sarkar, (Rajabala) Mizanur Kazi, (Selsella) FCA Sangma, (North Tura) Thomas A Sangma, (Salmanpara) Ian Botham Sangma and (Siju Rongara) Rakkam Sangma.Agatha, who had made a mark for herself as a young parliamentarian during her short stint, will seek entry into the state legislative assembly for the first time in her political career.
