Social activist gets Shiromani Panth Ratan award

SHIMLA: Baba Iqbal Singh (96) who created one of the biggest, most efficient networks of charity in India, has been conferred the ‘Shiromani Panth Ratan’ award (crowning jewel of the Sikh cause) at Takht Sri Harmandir Ji Patna Sahib. He believes that children in rural areas have been excluded from the mainstream and cannot contribute to the nation’s growth. Therefore, it is necessary to educate, enshrine and empower them.Apart from the educational programmes, Singh established 129 low-cost schools and two private universities at Baru Sahib in Himachal and several other places in Punjab, Haryana, UP and Rajasthan . This is the highest honour awarded by one of the Takhts to an individual for exceptional and meritorious services rendered to the Sikh cause.Baba Iqbal Singh, with the support of volunteers, has been imparting value-based education in marginalised areas of North India.
