Himachal and Punjab police join hands to tackle drug trade

DHARAMSHALA: The Himachal Pradesh and Punjab police have joined hands to tackle drug trade in the border areas of Kangra, Pathankot and Hoshiarpur districts, that connect the two states. This action would be taken in the jurisdiction of the police station of Nurpur and Indora constituencies.It was learnt that the joint operation started after a meeting with the Pathankot SSP. The state police had till May 31 seized 229 kg charas, 4 kg opium and 263 kg of poppy husk.Chief minister Jairam Thakur had recently said 27 % of youth in state were affected by drugs. The top cops of both the states will formulate a strategy to nab the mining and drug traders.The areas that would get special attention are Nurpur, Kandwal, Dhangupeer, Indora and Damtal.While the police refused to divulge other details of this operation, the development comes after few videos of Himachal youths under influence of drugs went viral. Besides drugs, illegal mining is also rampant in these areas.Superintendent of police Santosh Patial told TOI that nabbing people involved in cross-border smuggling had become a challenging task due to border issues and that many times police teams had missed the catch after the drug traders crossed the border.“We have finally asked the Punjab Police in adjacent districts to cooperate with us to end this menace, to which they have agreed and a joint operation was started from today,” said Patial.Police would be raiding restaurants, hotels and lodges besides other suspected places notorious for this trade.
