Chamba police launches drive against cannabis and drug peddling

AMRITSAR: While Punjab is grappling to weed out the deadly heroin Chamba district of neighbouring state Himachal Pradesh has now launched a drive to eradicate cannabis (charas) weed which has taken the youth in its grip for an easy ‘high’.Presently as many as 126 persons in the age group of 20-30 years are lodged in Chamba jail for peddling charas. Chamba police had launched a drive with active public participation to eradicate weed (Cannabis indica) and create awareness among youth against the perils of drug abuse, said Chamba Superintendent of Police (SP), Monika Bhutungru while talking to TOI on Sunday.Being a producing district, the weed from Chamba is smuggled to various cities of Punjab like Amritsar, Jalandhar , Ludhiana and Jammu and Kashmir while drugs like heroin, intoxicating capsules, tablets and injectables have started finding acceptance among drug addicts of the hill district.Normally police administration, along with support of other departments, carries out annual weed eradication drive in the month of June but according to sources, the higher reaches or terrains which are difficult to reach are left out of drive which eventually produces commercial quantities of charas.The charas peddling has also started attracting women for making quick money. Monika informed that in recent past, Chamba police had held a women Bhikhoo and received over one kilogram of charas from her possession .Sources informed that in Chamba, Charas was sold for around Rs 15000 per kilogram but in Amritsar, the high quality charas was sold for anything around Rs 45000 to Rs 60000.The Chamba SP said that police administration had exhorted the local residents to form a group of ten or more volunteers and adopt a cannabis-infested village or a ward to motivate the youth to quit drugs adding that police would not only arrange for orientation sessions for the groups but would also play a role of coordinator.When asked how grave was the situation of other drugs including heroin etc she replied, “These drugs have now started finding way in Chamba, in last five moths we have registered as many as half a dozen cases.”
