Kullu residents help police in fighting drug trade abuse

The SP said the operation would imply immediate response and lawful action on information against drug abuse, illicit sale of liquor, peddlers and will provide assistance to youth if they fall prey to drug abuse. Mahila mandals, yuvak mandals, self help groups and panchayat representatives have been engaged to stop the menace. Hopefully very soon we shall succeed in our mission of making a drug free society with help of public,” the SP added.

MANALI: Kullu police’s initiative ‘Sehbhagita hamari aur apki’, which began in February to encourage people of Kullu to help them in tightening noose on crime, has resulted in police getting over 150 phone calls regarding complaint about drug trade , drug abuse, cultivation of cannabis and many social problems.Police have now launched ‘Operation street dominance’ to keep the criminals and trouble makers out of the streets and keep a watch over them with the help from local residents . Two helpline numbers 8219681600 and 8219681601 have also been launched the purpose and the police are arranging meetings and seminars in villages and schools. Street plays, videos and social media were used to sensitize the public and establish friendly relation between police and public.Kullu superintendent of police Shalini Agnihotri said under ‘Operation street dominance’ all SHOs shall depute competent policemen from their police station to respond to information received from people with sincerity and urgency. “Each team shall reach out to people, patrol near educational institutions, abandoned buildings and secluded areas used for drug abuse, sale and purchase. They will have local informers as well. They will report to me every week,” she said.The teams will have record of habitual criminals of area, convicted and acquitted people in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cases, victims, thieves, peddlers, drug trade nexus and would keep an eye on their activities. The SP said the operation would imply immediate response and lawful action on information against drug abuse, illicit sale of liquor, peddlers and will provide assistance to youth if they fall prey to drug abuse. “Basic aim of the operation will be to know, understand and solve the street level issues related to drugs.”After charas, use of other synthetic drugs by youth in Kullu is a big problem. Mahila mandals, yuvak mandals, self help groups and panchayat representatives have been engaged to stop the menace. Some mahila and yuvak mandals have come up with idea of imposing fine on smoking, drinking and gambling in open or public areas and protection of the forest cover.“Mostly we get information from public on small-time criminals and peddlers. We already have six dedicated teams formed to catch commercial cases under the NDPS Act. We equally respond fast to the public information to realize them that police really cares for them. Hopefully very soon we shall succeed in our mission of making a drug free society with help of public,” the SP added.
