SHIMLA: With water samples from major tanks frequently failing laboratory tests, Shimla is facing threat of water-borne diseases once again.Samples lifted between July 14 and 17 have failed tests for Nabha and Phagli areas as the presence of bacteria (Citrobacter Spp and Klebsiella Oxytoca ) was found in them. “In view of the alarming situation seen from the video in respect of the plastic waste, the matter requires immediate attention in the interest of protection of environment and public at large,” the tribunal had stated while taking suo motu cognizance of the matter Former CPM mayor Sanjay Chauhan said samples were failing frequently as the BJP-led municipal corporation has completely failed to provide safe and clean drinking water to residents since the last one year.Around 11 samples have failed tests conducted at the department of microbiology, Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMCH).While the municipal corporation has advised the people to consume water only after properly boiling it, Chauhan said the attention of BJP government was towards privatisation of water supply and distribution for which a company had already been formed. ‘”However, no attention is being towards the quality of water being supplied to the residents,” he said, adding that for the last around one year, water samples had been frequently failing tests and the state government as well as the MC were not serious to improve the quality. The former mayor alleged that despite samples of Ashwani Khad repeatedly failing, the state government was adamant to supply water from there. He also questioned installation of ultraviolent technology to clean Ashwani Khad water and termed it as sheer wastage of public money. He said that water quality should be improved at the earliest and residents should be supplied water on daily basis. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had recently taken serious view of plastic dumped at Ashwani Khad, which is one of the major water source for the tourist town.
