500 roads blocked, water supply hit too

SHIMLA: As many as 495 roads were still blocked on Tuesday and efforts were on to restore road connectivity with the opening of 428 roads. Chandigarh-Shimla national highway remained blocked on Tuesday due to landslides at several places due to which several kilometer long jam was witnessed on both sides of blocked stretch for hours. There were around 13 trains running between these two destinations.The track is about 164-km long, with 950 bridges and 33 stations. Rains had led to landslides which buried the narrow gauge track at several places. On Monday, the government had said that 923 roads, including six national highways, were blocked by landslides.In addition, incessant heavy rains have wreaked havoc on standing crops in many districts and irrigation and drinking water supply too has been affected.

A portion of road along the Ashwani Khad was also washed away in the heavy rainfall of Monday due to which many villages in the area have been cut off.Meanwhile, rail services between Pathankot of Punjab to Jogindernagar in Himachal remained suspended on Tuesday also. Rains had led to landslides which buried the narrow gauge track at several places. There were around 13 trains running between these two destinations.The track is about 164-km long, with 950 bridges and 33 stations.
