Dharamshala: Tibetans living in exile celebrated ‘Democracy Day’ at their global headquarters here. Tibetan administration and community gathered at main Buddhist temple at Mcleodganj to observe the 58th anniversary of their democracy.Lively Tibetan music, joyful cheers and laughter echoed throughout the courtyard of the temple as thousands of people, government officials and dignitaries gathered to celebrate the joyous occasion. Event was attended by the MP Bharatendra Singh as chief guest, accompanied by Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) President Lobsang Sangay, speaker of Tibetan parliament Ven Khenpo Tenphel, along with other parliamentarians and ministers of various departments and other dignitaries of CTA.Addressing the gathering, Sangay highlighted the inception and evolution of Tibetan Democracy envisioned by the Dalai Lama and drew attention on the unique nature of Tibetan Democracy and how it serves as a spokesperson for the Tibetan brothers and sisters “struggling under China’s illegal occupation”.Tibetan cabinet in his statement said that on this very day in 1960, the first meeting of the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile was held with members representing each of the three traditional provinces and the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. In 1963, women representative were included in the Parliament, he said.Tibetan Parliament-in-exile launched a major initiative to solicit support for the issue of Tibet in different states across India and this remains an ongoing effort.“Our aspiration is that through this solicitation, prominent figures throughout the country, especially members of the parliament and state legislative assemblies, will gain a good grasp of the real situation in Tibet and accordingly render their strong support for the issue of Tibet,” said a statement issued here.
