Efforts on to resolve Pong Dam ousteesrsquo issues

SHIMLA: Chief minister Jai Ram Thakur said that all out efforts were being made by the state to resolve the long pending issues of Pong Dam oustees with the Rajasthan government for the allotment of land. He said that the Supreme Court had decided the matter in favour of Himachal Pradesh, so the state would take its due share.Rajasthan chief secretary DB Gupta and Himachal Pradesh chief secretary Vineet Chawdhry had held a meeting on August 3 in Jaipur to discuss the pending issues of Pong Dam oustees. The dam is the direct source of water for the Indira Gandhi Canal Project (IGNP) in Rajasthan. He said that the Rajasthan government wants to allot land to oustees at Jaisalmer while the state government was demanding allotment of land in Sri Ganganagar as land here was fertile. He said that already a chief secretary-level meeting had been held between the two states and now the chief ministers of both states would meet in the coming days to resolve the matter.

For the last around 57 years, many people whose land was acquired for the construction of the dam in Himachal Pradesh were struggling to get their due rights, including land in Rajasthan.For the construction of dam a total 339 villages were affected and 75,268 acres were acquired, resulting in displacement of 20,722 families in 1961. In March, Thakur had informed the state assembly that land had been allotted in 12,041 cases while 4,218 cases had been rejected.Pong Dam or Maharana Pratap Sagar Dam was constructed in 1975 by building the highest earth fill dam in India on the Beas in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. The dam is the direct source of water for the Indira Gandhi Canal Project (IGNP) in Rajasthan. The construction of the dam has brought prosperity and greenery to Rajasthan but people from Himachal Pradesh, whose land was acquired for the dam project till date are running from pillar to post for their rehabilitation.Interacting with mediapersons at Pandoh during his tour of Mandi district , Thakur said that already a consensus had been evolved on many issues during the meetings of chief secretaries while the remaining issues would be settled in the meeting of chief ministers. He said that the Rajasthan government wants to allot land to oustees at Jaisalmer while the state government was demanding allotment of land in Sri Ganganagar as land here was fertile.
