Rains batter Himachal Pradesh 378 roads closed 13 dead across north India

On Monday, 378 roads were closed due to landslides — 213 roads in Shimla zone, 49 in Mandi zone, 29 in Hamirpur zone and 86 in Kangra zone. The Indian Air Force rescued 21 persons, including two on Monday, and 14 persons were rescued by adopting other means. From Koksar, 45 vehicles have been retrieved.In Chamba district, 600 students and teachers were shifted from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and 100 students from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya Mehla. At Gagret in Una, the manager of a juice factory was killed after a landslide hit the factory.Heavy rain severely affected life in 10 of 12 districts of Himachal Pradesh . A temporary road link for small vehicles has been established through Raison Bridge.Kullu deputy commissioner Yunus said so far only three deaths have been confirmed in the district.

13 people were killed across north India as incessant heavy rain triggered flash floods and landslides.A family of five was buried alive in a landslide in J&K’s Doda district while a 45-year-old man died in a roof collapse in Haryana’s Ambala district.Three people, including a girl, were swept away by flash floods in Kullu while two others stranded were airlifted to safety. In Jwali area of Kangra, a 31-yearold was swept away in the swollen Nahad rivulet.A 50-year-old man, Kuldeep Chand Sharma, drowned in a village water channel in Dharamshala while a seven-month old baby drowned after her mother slipped and fell in a water channel in Gulel village of Salooni tehsil in Chamba. Traffic along Kalka-Shimla highway was disrupted after a huge boulder hit a moving car but the occupants escaped unhurt.People living along river banks evacuatedLandslide and falling boulders along Unesco World Heritage Kalka-Shimla rail line at Raboun also led to suspension of rail traffic.The government led by chief minister Jai Ram Thakur calculated the damage to the roads to be around Rs 78,914 lakh. Thakur chaired a Cabinet meeting in Shimla to review losses, rehabilitation and rescue operations.With the Beas and Ravi and their tributary nullahs flowing at danger mark, hundreds of people living along the banks of the two rivers were evacuated to safer locations in Kullu, Chamba, Kangra and Mandi districts. Many houses were swept away by flash floods in the Beas.The district administrations have decided to keep schools and colleges closed in Hamirpur, Sirmaur, Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti on Tuesday too.In the last 48 hours, 120 stranded persons were rescued from Koksar in Lahaul-Spiti, 23 from Marhi, 31 from Rohtang, 33 persons from Phojal in Kullu. The Indian Air Force rescued 21 persons, including two on Monday, and 14 persons were rescued by adopting other means. From Koksar, 45 vehicles have been retrieved.In Chamba district, 600 students and teachers were shifted from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and 100 students from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya Mehla. In addition to this, three families of Rakh in Chamba district were also shifted to PWD Rest House.At Keylong in Lahaul-Spiti, 12 tourists from Sikkim were evacuated to a hotel.Himachal transport minister Govind Singh Thakur said the rivers and nullahs in the state have been flowing above danger mark for the last three days, resulting in flood-like situation and causing extensive damage right from Palchan near Rohtang Pass to Aut in Mandi district.However, as per the latest satellite cloud picture and weather radar, there is no alert regarding heavy precipitation over Himachal Pradesh at night. Light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur in the districts of Una, Hamirpur and parts of Kullu.Traffic on Mandi-Manali highway remained suspended as a portion of road submerged in the Beas at Kara near Aut and for the time being the traffic for Kullu is going via Kandi-Kataula road.Popular tourist town of Manali has lost road connectivity as stretches along the banks of the Beas have been washed away at many places. A temporary road link for small vehicles has been established through Raison Bridge.Kullu deputy commissioner Yunus said so far only three deaths have been confirmed in the district. He said two youths were washed away in Manikaran and a 14-year-old girl was swept away in Bajaura.Two persons stranded at Bajaura were rescued by an IAF helicopter on Monday morning.The Chandigarh-Manali national highway on the right bank of the Beas has been damaged by flooding at Kalath, Patlikuhl and Katrain, said Yunus.
