Snowfall triggers cold waves, blocks roads in Himachal Pradesh

The Manali-Rohtang-Keylong road has been blocked after heavy snowfall at Rohtang pass. A large number of vehicles heading to Kullu are stuck in Lahaul. Hundreds of tribals from Lahaul are yet to shift to Kullu to avoid harsh winter season of the valley. Border Roads Organization would clear snow from the highway after the weather turns favourable.Rohtang pass has received nearly 30cm of fresh snow. Keylong, Koksar and Udaipur in Lahaul received 12cm, 15cm and 10cm snow, respectively. Gulaba and Solang near Manali are covered in thin layer of snow. Peaks of Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal range are receiving snow since Friday early morning. Many parts of the state at lower altitude received rain. With continuous decrease in temperature, snowline is descending to low altitude area. Solang valley, 13km from Manali, experienced first snowfall of the season on Friday.Tourist vehicles were allowed to go only till Gulaba. No vehicle is being allowed to go towards Rohtang pass from Gulaba and Koksar check posts.At minus 1.1 degree Celsius, Keylong was the coldest in the state. Shimla and Dharamshala recorded minimum temperature of 10.5 and 12.4 degrees Celsius, respectively.Issuing weather advisory for next 48 hours, Kullu deputy commissioner Yunus said: “Higher regions are receiving snow and lower regions are getting rains. An alert has been sounded, given the bad weather conditions on November 3 and 4. People living on higher regions are requested to stay alert and avoid going to isolated areas. Tourists are advised not to go towards Rohtang pass.”Manmohan Singh, director of Meteorological centre in Shimla, has predicted more snowfall on high hills and rain on mid and low hills on Saturday and Sunday. “The maximum day temperature has increased by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius in last 24 hours. Weather will remain generally dry Sunday onwards,” he said.
