Chinese firm proposes smart transport system for Shimla

SHIMLA: On Thursday, a Chinese company, FDDC and Bureau Group Company Limited, was the latest to make a presentation on alternative transport system for Shimla to chief minister Jai Ram Thakur . The ambitious project proposed to decongest Shimla at a cost of around Rs 75 crore per km and was to be completed in three years’ time. It could transport 1,000 passengers in one hour from one point to another.As far back as 2013, during previous Congress regime headed by Virbhadra Singh, the idea of light rail transit system (tramway) was floated. A technical team from the French Embassy had even started a feasible study on the project. The proposed distance is 14km and would be covered in 20 minutes.

The company’s grand idea for Shimla included mono rail, ropeway, lifts and escalators.The roads of Shimla have been choked by heavy rush of vehicles and the state government is contemplating to start monorail services to decongest the traffic on roads.Earlier in October, INTAMIN Transportation from Switzerland submitted its proposal for a monorail project in Shimla. The company has over 50 years experience and, according to the representatives of the INTAMIN Transportation, the project would take about two years for completion.The proposed mono rail would start from ISBT Tutikandi and conclude at Panthaghati with 12 stops in between. The proposed distance is 14km and would be covered in 20 minutes.
