SHIMLA: The state government has intensified the probe in the multi-crore scholarship scam Following the directions, the education department has handed over the record of scam amounting to Rs 250 crore to the home department with the purpose of getting a detailed probe conducted through the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).Sources said the move has created flutters among the staff in the education department, who know that the home department would soon hand over this record to the CBI, which would then start its investigation.Sources said many educational institutions could be asked to join the probe along with the officials of education department and private educational institutes.During the previous regime, the state had witnessed a multi-crore scam in the distribution of scholarships to SC/ST and OBC students. Sources said the CBI is ready to probe the matter, but so far it has not received a letter from the personnel department for the same.During the departmental probe, it had come to light that around 70% institutions availing the scholarship benefits belonged to other states. Distribution of scholarship to students of open university had raised many questions, sources said.Chief minister Jai Ram Thakur-led BJP government on August 21 this year had taken the decision to hand over the investigation of scholarship scam to the CBI. The decision had been taken after many irregularities came to light during the meeting held to review the scholarship distribution during the previous Congress regime.
