DHARAMSHALA: Chamba district has been hit hard by the snowfall. In last two days, snow blocked about 88 roads in the region and about 300 villages remain in dark due to power failure.Chamba is on the national list of backward districts. Road is the only medium of transport in this region, while state government deploys helicopter during winters on demand by the people.District commissioner Harikesh Meena told TOI that roads were closed to Pangi area and about 161 people took flight to and from from Chamba district headquarters this week. Few patients also reached the main town this way. He said that officials were working hard to normalize the life and efforts were on to restore power and water supply to the affected areas.The PWD has reported a loss of about Rs 3.5 crore because of snowfall. "Priority is given to open the main roads first and then link roads. Most of them were opened till Monday evening," said an official.
