At least nine people were killed and seven others were reported missing after cloudbursts hit Lahaul-Spiti, Kullu and Chamba districts of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday night and early on Wednesday.

Himachal has been seeing quite a lot of disturbance as landslide and flash flood keep occurring putting people’s life in jeopardy.

At least nine people were killed and seven others were reported missing after cloudbursts hit Lahaul-Spiti, Kullu and Chamba districts of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday night and early on Wednesday.

The missing persons include four from Kullu and three from Lahaul district.

As per the officials, a cloudburst in Tozing nullah in Lahaul washed away some tents and three vehicles.

Two vehicles – one heading towards Pangi and another towards Jahlma, got stuck in a high flow of water in the Tozing nullah on Tuesday night.

An earth-moving vehicle of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) was pressed into service to pull out the stranded vehicles.

Lahaul-Spiti deputy commissioner Neeraj Kumar said a rescue operation was launched immediately and one person was rescued.

“One person has sustained serious injuries. He has been referred to a hospital outside the district. So far, nine bodies have also been recovered. At least seven people are still missing. We hope that some of them are still alive. We have sought help from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) while our disaster management department, BRO, police and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) are already engaged in the rescue operation,” he said.

Another cloudburst wreaked havoc in Brahma Ganga rivulet near Manikaran in Kullu district early on Wednesday.
Floodwaters entered homes in several residential localities.

Four people are reported to be missing in the incident.
Kullu superintendent of police Gurdev Chand Sharma said, “Three people, identified as Poonam (26), her son Nikunj (4), residents of Brahmganga village and tourist Vinita (25), a resident of Ghaziabad have been washed away in the flashflood. One more person Virender, a resident of Sangana village is also missing.”

The hill state is receiving intermittent rain but isolated areas are lashed with heavy rain which have triggered flashfloods and landslides.

A large number of roads in the state are blocked.

The Manali-Leh highway is blocked at many places. Keylong-Kishtwar road is also blocked. The Chandigarh-Manali national highway is blocked as boulders are rolling down on the highway between Aut and Mandi.

The Mandi-Kullu bypass road via Kataula is also blocked due to landslides. A major bridge at Jahlma village in Lahaul has been washed away.

The Manali-Rohtang highway has also been blocked following two landslides.

In Kullu, three vehicles got hit by debris as torrential rains triggered flooding of the local nullah.

Lahaul-Spiti SP Manav Verma said of nine missing in Tozing nullah flood, four are the BRO employees, two work with Airtel and four were travelling towards Pangi valley.

“A total of seven people were travelling towards Pangi. Four are missing while three have been rescued. Many other people have been evacuated from different parts of the district and have been moved to safe places. Search and rescue operations are under way,” he said.
