Yellow road markings to ease parking woes in Manali

MANALI: The search for parking spots along the motorways is definitely a problem for tourists in Manali. The administration will write to the Border Roads Organization (BRO) to seek their cooperation in marking yellow lines on the Manali-Leh highway as well on stretches which come under their jurisdiction. Tourists have trouble finding parking spaces for their vehicles and shortage of police staff only makes matters worse since haphazard parking leads to traffic jams.The local administration is trying to build a temporary parking for tourists close to the Beas. Municipal council president Shabnam Tanwar said, "We don't have space to build parking lots. District administration has assured that arrangement of medicines will be made at Rohtang this season.

MANALI: The search for parking spots along the motorways is definitely a problem for tourists in Manali. Since finding additional space for parking of tourist vehicles is a problem, the local administration has decided to paint yellow lines on the highways where vehicles can be parked.Kullu deputy commissioner Yunus has directed Manali sub-divisional magistrate, police and municipal council to consider marking yellow lines at some places on the highway to make parking legal there. The administration will write to the Border Roads Organization (BRO) to seek their cooperation in marking yellow lines on the Manali-Leh highway as well on stretches which come under their jurisdiction. Tourists have trouble finding parking spaces for their vehicles and shortage of police staff only makes matters worse since haphazard parking leads to traffic jams.The local administration is trying to build a temporary parking for tourists close to the Beas. Municipal council president Shabnam Tanwar said, "We don't have space to build parking lots. We are trying to utilize every inch of land available. Teh Beas flood waters have already flattened some area near the town. We are removing the boulders to make a temporary parking here. This is the only option to decongest town."Meanwhile, administration is now concentrating on traffic bottlenecks on the highway. Small bailey bridges will be repaired and highways widened wherever possibile. Four-laning of Nerchowk-Manali highway is also causing traffic jams. The contractors have been asked to work in a way that it doesn't hold up traffic. However, Manali bound heavy vehicles will be diverted from Kullu and made to take the bypass road to ensure smooth running of vehicles.Kullu deputy commissioner Yunus said damaged portions of roads, including bridge near Manali, will be repaired. "Alternate arrangements for parking are being made. Tourist activities in Rohtang area are being regularized. Hoteliers, bus operators, travel agents and taxi operators have been directed to work under law in well behaved manner."Meanwhile, BRO official has requested district administration to make necessary arrangements of medicines at Rohtang pass as many tourists complain about dizziness and high altitude sickness. He said that unavailability of immediate medication can prove fatal for anybody. District administration has assured that arrangement of medicines will be made at Rohtang this season.
