In a first, warning boards in Punjabi erected near Kangra water bodies

DHARAMSHALA: For the first time, the authorities here have come up with warning boards in Punjabi language erected on the banks of streams and rivers flowing across the roads in Kangra. As the valley is the nearest and easily approachable destination for the people of neighbouring state, Punjab, during summer season. "It was learnt that the majority of the cases were of visitors from Punjab, so we have decided to erect warning boards in Punjabi language to aware them about not entering the waters," said Sanjeev Gandhi , senior superintendent of police here.Sources said that till now around 30 warning boards in Punjabi have been erected in Kangra along roadside of rivulets and streams. They were from Rihan Kalan village of Hoshiarpur. It was also said that many more boards are expected to be erected in the valley.The last major incident of drowning was in August 2016, when five persons between the age of 18 to 23 years died taking bath in a roadside rivulet.

They get lured by these streams coming out of the Dhauladhar ranges to beat the heat, but it often results in drowning incidents.Officials have said that mostly the day trippers from Punjab were the victims of drowning accidents. "It was learnt that the majority of the cases were of visitors from Punjab, so we have decided to erect warning boards in Punjabi language to aware them about not entering the waters," said Sanjeev Gandhi , senior superintendent of police here.Sources said that till now around 30 warning boards in Punjabi have been erected in Kangra along roadside of rivulets and streams. Baner stream in Kangra is also a known spot of drowning deaths which has galloped around 30 persons so far and the last incident of drowning was of a 20-year-old Punjabi youth.Gandhi said Kaleshwar in Kangra was known for such incidents at the time of holy bath events, but no such incident has taken place this year as apart from the warning boards, additional force was also deployed there.
