Women rise against liquor vends in Himachal

SHIMLA: Liquor vends in Himachal Pradesh are facing large scale opposition from the women folk of the state. On Wednesday, women and youth of the state held a massive protest at a tourist resort in Narkanda to oppose the opening of liquor vends. They later lodged a complaint with sub divisional magistrate demanding to not open liquor vend in their area. Women folk of Khodri Majri on the other hand gheraoed the liquor vend in their area.A senior official from the excise department, requesting anonymity, said liquor vends are being opened in accordance with the Supreme Court directions and only after fulfilling all the criteria. Women of Khanag village in Kullu district have issued warnings stating that whoever rents out premises for liquor vends would face social boycott.Women are of the view that consumption of liquor not only creates nuisance but even ruins families.

Representatives of pancyhayats along with Yuvak Mandal and Mahila Mandals not only raised slogans but also submitted a memorandum to Shimla deputy commissioner on the issue.In Mandi district, women damaged the shutter of a liquor vend, which was under construction. They later lodged a complaint with sub divisional magistrate demanding to not open liquor vend in their area. Similar protestations were observed in Simaur district. Women folk of Khodri Majri on the other hand gheraoed the liquor vend in their area.A senior official from the excise department, requesting anonymity, said liquor vends are being opened in accordance with the Supreme Court directions and only after fulfilling all the criteria. Protests are uncalled for, he said.
