Panel to probe fish dying in Rewalsar lake of Himachal

Environment engineer from the State Pollution Control Board Bilaspur and assistant director of Fisheries, Mandi, will be its members while principal scientific officer-I, State Council for Science Technology and Environment, will be its member secretary.Additional chief secretary (Environment, Science and Technology) Tarun Kapoor said that the committee will assess the whole situation in detail and will pinpoint the reasons for the fish mortality and suggest remedial measures. He said the committee would submit its report to the government within seven days.A couple of days back, a sudden change in the colour of lake water was witnessed and later thousands of fish were found dead in the lake. In her complaint, Leela Vashishth said that on April 18, around 9 pm she had gone for evening walk after dinner with some other women of her locality at the lake and while taking the round of lake they found water colour had turned and fish were dying.She has suspected that some unidentified person has used poisonous chemical to kill the fish. Based on her complaint, police have registered a case of mischief by killing or maiming cattle or any animal.According to sources, investigation conducted by experts so far has found that fish have died due to very low oxygen level in the lake water. To save the remaining fish, fresh water and oxygen are being pumped in lake water, they said.
