Now, Himachal scraps use of red beacons atop vehicles

SHIMLA: Following on the footsteps of Prime Minister Narendra Modi Himachal Pradesh too has scrapped the previous notification allowing the use of red, amber or blue beacons atop the vehicles. Those doing it voluntarily included governor Acharya Devvrat, former chief minister and leader of opposition Prem Kumar Dhumal, few MLAs and vice-chancellor of Himachal Pradesh university. The move is being dubbed as a step towards ending VIP culture in the state.Before Friday's notification, there were some VIPs who had voluntarily removed the red light from their vehicles. In a new notification issued on Friday, government has made it clear that barring the judges of high court, no one else could use the red beacons on their vehicles.The notification issued by principal secretary (transport) Sanjay Gupta informed that the state government has withdrawn the use of red, amber or blue lights on the top of the official vehicles of all dignitaries except the chief justice of Himachal Pradesh high court and judges of high court.With this notification now, government, chief minister, cabinet ministers and others would not be able to use the red lights on their vehicles while chief parliamentary secretaries and MLAs would not be able to use amber light on their vehicles.Chairman and vice-chairman of different boards and corporations besides officials would not be able to use the blue light on their vehicles.
