SHIMLA: CBI on Thursday arrested former Shimla SP, D W Negi , in the custodial death of an accused in the infamous gang rape and murder of a minor girl in Kotkhai area of Shimla on July 6. The CBI team produced Negi before the court of chief judicial magistrate, Shimla, and given remand till November 20. Suraj Singh was arrested in the case on July 13 and was found dead in the Kotkhai jail on July 18, alleged killed by another accused.CBI arrested Negi after visiting Kotkhai on Tuesday and Wednesday. Sources said the officials visited the Bankuffar area on Tuesday and questioned two of the accused currently out on bail. The CBI had also collected information from teachers of the school where the minor girl studied. The officials had returned to Shimla on Wednesday and moved an application in the court, seeking permission to obtain the voice samples of arrested police officials.Negi was Shimla SP in July when the gang rape and murder besides the custodial killing of accused Suraj took place. Following public outrage, the Himachal Pradesh government had transferred Negi to state vigilance and anti-corruption bureau.Earlier on August 29, CBI had arrested eight police officials of Himachal Pradesh, including an IGP Zahur H Zaidi, who was heading the special investigating team (SIT) probing the gang rape and murder. Others who have been arrested are then DSP of Theog; a sub-inspector and then SHO of Kotkhai; an ASI, three head constables and one constable.CBI had registered two cases on the orders of Himachal Pradesh high court on July 19 this year and had taken over the investigation of the gang rape and murder case along with the custodial death case registered on July 19.Suraj was found dead in Kotkhai jail, allegedly beaten to death by other accused and had led into angry rioting by residents and a part of the Kotkhai police station was also set on fire. The cops had initially claimed that Surah was killed by Rajender Singh aka Raju, alleged to be the main accused in the gang rape and murder, who was lodged in the same lockup with Suraj after a heated argument.After registering an FIR in the custodial death, CBI had had re-examined Suraj's body on July 25.
